PRINCE2:2009 is a major overhaul of PRINCE2™. Changes were introduced as a result of "user consultation".
The precise changes are still a closely guarded secret, but some details have been leaked.
Some significant changes have already been "announced" (these are of course subject to final acceptance).
The dropping of all prescribed techniques within the method
PRINCE2™ had a few holes: it identified eight key project management "components" but only provided three techniques to support these - Product Based Planning, Quality Reviews and Change Control.
It now seems that rather than plugging these holes, it is proposing to drop the three inherent techniques - including product based planning.
In fact the chapters on Techniques and Components have been removed completely from the revised manuals.
So now if PRINCE2™ users want to be taught how to actually do something - rather than just understand the need to do it - they have to look elsewhere.
The dropping of the 45 sub-processes
People rightly felt that 45 sub-processes were too complex. A closer look at the revised PRINCE2™ process maps show the eight processes have been reduced to seven - with Planning being omitted.
However, although the proposal is to "drop" the sub-processes - the revised process maps still show the sub-processes - it just renames them "activities".
The revised manual will be split into two smaller ones
There will now be two smaller books: 'Managing Successful Projects Using PRINCE2' and a new 'Directing Successful Projects Using PRINCE2' manual which will be laid out in a way that makes them easier to understand and navigate.
